North Haledon, New Jersey (US):
After wells tainted with a carcinogenic chemical were discovered this year, state officials have found very few other privately owned wells with contaminated water. But how the carcinogen got there in the first place could remain unknown for a long while.
The Department of Environmental Protection began testing wells in late September, after traces of trichloroethylene were found in a number of wells near Westervelt Avenue between March and September.
Trichloroethylene, or TCE, is a cancer-causing chemical found in degreasing solvents. Before their testing, DEP officials wouldn't confirm how many wells were contaminated, but they said 18 borough residents had applied for funds to cover the cost of installing point-of-entry-treatment systems in their homes. This week, the DEP said two of 27 additional wells tested in the area had TCE levels of 1.4 and 1.6 parts per billion, respectively. The state limit is 1 part per billion.
