Detroit, Michigan (US):
Whatever caused Jiri Fischer to have a seizure and his heart to lapse into a terminal rhythm will likely remain a mystery, the team physician for the Detroit Red Wings said.
And if the cause is not detected, Dr. Tony Colucci said he would not recommend Fischer return to hockey. He said the 25-year-old defenseman would have to make that difficult decision himself.
Doctors will continue to search for answers. Fischer, who's resting comfortably at home, has been told to avoid physical activity for a minimum of four to six weeks.
He'll continue to be tested by a variety of specialists, including a cardiologist, a neurologist and an epileptologist (to determine if he has epilepsy).
In the meantime, the Red Wings are bracing for the likelihood that Fischer won't return this season. It's a huge blow to a defense that was already missing budding star Niklas Kronwall (knee surgery) and veteran Jason Woolley (groin strain).
