Colombo, (Sri Lanka):
Mystery deepens on the plight of Colonel Bahnu, as special attempts were taken to cover up the whole sickening episode - the attack and death of the LTTE cadres on Monday night, 10 October at Vavunathievu, nearly 05 kilometers away from Batticalao .
It was reported yesterday that LTTE convoy of four vehicles which included a Canter lorry, a double cab and two motorcycles, in which battle-hardened Colonel Bahnu, LTTE’s Special Commander of Batticaloa Amparai Districts reported to have traveled, was completely destroyed after it came under heavy attack by the Tamil National Force in the LTTE controlled Vavunathievu area in Batticaloa district.
According to Tamil National Force, which claimed responsibility for the attack, told that they targeted Colonel Bhanu and all four in the pick-up vehicle in which LTTE’s Special Commander said to have traveled, were killed and the double-capped vehicle was completely damaged.
Tamil National Force spokesman while describing the attack said that they exploded a claymore mine and had attacked the convoy with small arms completely destroying the Canter and the double cab.
The spokesman further said that their men were hiding inside the LTTE’s deserted checkpoint located in the entrance of the LTTE controlled area and waited for Colonel Bhanu and his convoys’ arrival after participating in a meeting at Kokkaddicholai.
According to civilians in the area, they heard bomb blast and small arms fire for more than ten miniutes.
In the meantime it was reported that Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission spokesperson Vilja Kuzuvonen said the LTTE had sought Government Peace Secretariat assistance to airlift its cadres for medical treatment.
Meanwhile, the Government Peace Secretariat said yesterday it had decided to provide air transportation to the LTTE . Its Communications Director Sharmini Serasinghe said, the facility was provided on humanitarian grounds.
Later it was reported that Sri Lanka Army helicopter was seen landing in the LTTE controlled area at Karadyanaru and those cadres fatally wounded in the attack were ferried to Kilinochchi.
But it was not clear whether body bags were also ferried in the helicopter as the whole area surrounding the LTTE camp was cordoned off and was out of bounds for the civilians.
The plight of Colonel Bahnu, the war weary former Head of the Motor Regiment who succeeded Colonel Thambirajah Ramesh as the Batticaloa – Amparai Districts Special Commander, is still unclear.
Though pro-LTTE Tamil websites continues to cover up and paint a rosy picture, the news about Colonel Bhanu is still awaited.
