Police Concern For 'Wanderer' In Riverbank Mystery
Yorkshire (UK):
Police last night appealed for help in solving the mystery behind the disappearance of a man whose clothes were abandoned by the banks of a river in Yorkshire, hundreds of miles from his home. It is thought 62-year-old Bernard Vyse may have come to grief, but officers are keeping an open mind about the unusual set of circumstances in which he went missing.
The alarm was raised after the clothes and his passport were found in a green bag by the seats close to the tidal barrier at the river Hull on Thursday lunchtime by a member of the public, close to where the river flows into the Humber estuary.
Later another member of the public found a wallet containing a birth certificate in the Marina.Mr Vyse comes from Brownhills, Walsall in the West Midlands, and had no known connections with Hull. The Police Underwater Search Unit were on the river in their boat at the time and searched the area, but without success.
West Midlands police are checking Mr Vyse's flat for clues. Police have traced his sister, who also lives in the West Midlands, and she has told them he has a history of "wandering" and has minor health problems but is not aware of any reason why he may have come to Hull.
She and his brother-in-law were too distressed to comment yesterday.
