Beaconsfield (Australia):
The families of two Australian gold miners erupted in joy Sunday after Todd Russell, 34, and Brant Webb, 37, trapped nearly 3,000 feet underground for almost a week, were found still alive.
Two gold miners trapped a kilometer underground survived five days with the help of rancid water dripping down the walls as rescue teams worked carefully overnight to break through the last 12 meters of a rescue tunnel.
The workers at Tasmania's Beaconsfield Gold Mine said Todd and Brant made contact at 5:45pm (local time) on Sunday and are believed to be in good spirits despite their ordeal.
Mine manager Matthew Gill said at 3am on Monday both men had spoken to rescuers through a microphone extended into the area where they are trapped, 925 meters underground.
The two have survived in the area where they were trapped Tuesday, after a small earthquake triggered a rock slide that sealed the mine and killed one of their coworkers.
