The mystery "ghost ship" found drifting in the Gulf of Carpentaria last month was sent to a watery grave yesterday.
The 80m abandoned tanker was towed by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority out through the Torres Strait and sunk 20 nautical miles east of the Murray Islands in the Coral Sea.
Although identified as the "Jian Seng", "international inquiries" failed to find the vessel's owner.
The "ghost ship" had apparently been in Australian waters for up 17 days before a concerned local tipped off authorities, who found the tanker had been stripped for scrapping.
It's engines did not work and the vessel's equipment stores and ownership papers were missing.
