Wellington (New Zealand):
India has stripped its controversial high commissioner to New Zealand of his credential and has named his successor, said New Zealand media Thursday.
TVNZ said the accreditation of Harish Kumar Dogra has been withdrawn and that decision has been communicated to the New Zealand High Commission in New Delhi. His successor will take up the position shortly.
NZPA, a New Zealand news agency, said Dogra was asked by his government in mid-March to return to India within two weeks, but the envoy dug in his heels and claimed in a letter that he was being victimized by the foreign secretary for personal reasons.
Dogra was appointed as high commissioner in Wellington in 2004. New Zealand media quoted Dogra as saying he fears for his family's lives if they return to India, with Mrs Dogra saying they have received threats.
She is reported as saying they have no plans to return to India because they love New Zealand, which means they could seek asylum, said Talk ZB, a local radio program.
