Ian Thorpe may leave it as late as the opening day of competition to decide whether he will compete at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
Serious concerns over his long-term health have led Thorpe's coach, Tracey Menzies, and Australian head coach Alan Thompson to delay until as late as possible the decision to swim or pull out. Both admitted yesterday that if there were any risks to his health, Thorpe would not compete. In the past 10 days Thorpe has undergone several tests - including those for chronic fatigue syndrome and glandular fever.
He was originally diagnosed with bronchitis but has continued to feel lethargic, and is able to train for only 30 minutes a day.As his doctors have yet to determine the extent and nature of the "mystery virus", he has been told not extend himself in training as they don't want him to elevate his heart rate.
