Edmonton (Canada):
Internet pedophiles are laying low after news this week of a worldwide child-pornography ring with roots in Edmonton, police say. But cops don't expect the "monsters" will stay in hiding for very long. "I'm sure that many of these people have run and hidden," Edmonton city police Det. Randy Wickins said yesterday. "They'll come back out. They're not going away." Wickins was returning from Chicago, where Edmonton police were acknowledged Wednesday by the U.S. attorney general for their integral role in cracking the international ring. One key figure, 49-year-old Edmontonian Carl Treleaven, is to be sentenced today. Both the Crown and defence are seeking a sentence of 3 1/2 years in prison, which should prove that pedophiles "are not going to get a slap on the wrist," said Edmonton Internet crimes prosecutor Steven Bilodeau.
