Speculation that secretive North Korean leader Kim Jong-il is touring far southern China increased on Saturday as a closely guarded motorcade left a luxury hotel where he is rumored to be staying.
A convoy of about 30 cars left the White Swan Hotel in central Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, at 8 a.m., and may have been headed for Shenzhen, the commercial hub neighboring Hong Kong, according to local rumors and foreign reports.

Police guarding the Guangzhou hotel refused to comment. But the Wuzhou Guest House, a state-run hotel where Shenzhen receives many official guests, said it was taking no bookings for Saturday amid signs of tight security in that area.
South Korea's Yonhap news service reported Kim was spotted on Friday evening taking a cruise on the Pearl River through Guangzhou, while a Japanese television station showed footage of a man, possibly Kim, on a tour boat protected by smaller craft.
