"Lord Buckingham" Has Jail Sentence Cut
Scotsman
______
Canterbury (UK):
A bogus aristocrat who used a dead baby's name for 23 years and still refuses to reveal his true identity has won a drastic reduction in a 21-month jail sentence imposed on him last November.
The 43-year-old man - who appeared in court under his "stolen" name of Christopher Buckingham and had called himself "Lord Buckingham" - admitted making an untrue statement for the purpose of obtaining a passport. The Court of Appeal reduced his sentence to nine months.
Three appeal judges upheld argument by defence lawyers that the 21-month sentence was "manifestly excessive".Mathew Sherratt, counsel for Buckingham, argued that it was wrong to speculate as to why Buckingham used a false identity, and he should be given credit for the remorse he had shown towards his ex-wife and two children, who were kept in the dark about his true identity.
