Truck Driver Gets Life for Backpacker Murder

Bradley Murdoch was last night found guilty of the outback murder of British backpacker Peter Falconio.
A Darwin jury of six men and six women found the Broome mechanic guilty by unanimous verdict of the killing on July 14, 2001.Murdoch was also found guilty of assaulting Mr Falconio's girlfriend, Joanne Lees, and depriving her of her liberty.
The jury took eight hours to reach its verdict.Chief Justice Brian Martin sentenced Murdoch, 47, to the mandatory life term for murder.

But the question of where Mr Falconio's body is remains.The decision in the NT Supreme Court followed an eight-week trial, which heard from 85 witnesses and had more than 300 exhibits tendered.
Ms Lees' and Mr Falconio's family have been in court for the entire trial.She sat shaking in the public gallery as the jurors returned.Outside court, Ms Lees said she was delighted with the jury's verdict but also challenged Murdoch to reveal where Mr Falconio's body is.
