According to police, someone coming out of the Winn-Dixie store in a strip mall on the southwest corner of the intersection called police and reported seeing a man looking a lot like Rapalo wearing street clothes.
A tactical narcotics team was in the area, composed of 16 personnel, and they immediately began the chase, said Miami-Dade Police Director Robert Parker.Parker said the tipster described Rapalo very precisely, accurately identifying the blue jeans, black shirt and pink sweater he was wearing.
Rapalo had also shaved off his mustache and had lost weight from when he was last seen, Parker said. Guided by the tip, Miami-Dade narcotics detectives Wayne Cox and Alcides Velez spotted and approached Rapalo around 10 p.m. at the strip mall.''After speaking to him, he said he was homeless from Nicaragua,'' said Velez, a former corrections department officer who has been with Miami-Dade for two years.
''The detectives directed the suspect to sit, but instead he took off running through the parking lot. With the help of a canine tracker, police nabbed Rapalo near a nail salon.
Rapalo escaped sometime about 9:30 p.m. Dec. 20 from the TGK near Miami International Airport.
