Tenerife, Canary Island (Spain):
Croatian general Ante Gotovina was arrested by Spanish police on the Canary Island of Tenerife Wednesday night. He appeared in a hearing before a Spanish judge yesterday, and will be turned over to the International Criminal Court for the Ex-Yugoslavia to be tried for war crimes. Gotovina was transported in a military plane to Madrid after being arrested at a luxurious hotel on a popular beach. Spanish police have been looking for him since March 2004 when charges of mass murder were made against him by the court in The Hague.

Ante Gotovina was informed of the charges against him by Audiencia Nacional judge Félix Degayón, who ordered that he be held without bail and turned over immediately to the international court without passing through the extradition process. Gotovina, aged 50, is considered a hero by many in his country.
His arrest took place quickly and cleanly, without incidents, though police suspected he might be armed and might have bodyguards. He was carrying a false Croatian passport in the name of Kristian Horuat.
He is considered responsible for the murder of more than 150 Serbs during the ethnic cleansing of the southern Krajina region during the Yugoslavian war, and is accused of crimes against humanity and against the laws of war.
Prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero congratulated the police, and the PP expressed its happiness at the news.
