An unknown prospector with a keen ear for the tell-tale "murmur" of gold buried deep has scored a $50,000 Christmas bonus. But only one man knows the identity of the Ballarat-based prospector and he's not saying.
Cordell Kent, who owns the Mining Exchange Gold Shop in Ballarat, bought eight nuggets from the lucky individual, including one weighing 1.1kg -- as big as a packet of cigarettes -- for $50,000. "He found them a couple of weeks ago in the bush east of Scarsdale using a $5000 metal detector and he knew exactly what he was doing," Mr Kent said.
"He was working ground other people had already flogged to death and he heard the faintest murmur off his detector. You need to be an expert to pick that up." Mr Kent said the prospector unearthed the gold almost a metre underground.
The eight nuggets, plus about 50 tiny pieces of gold, were all found in a patch about 75cm square.
