Police Chief Murder Case Reopens in Nepal
Kathmandu (Nepal):
The sensational murder case of one of Nepal's top police officers and his wife finally re-opened creating a stir in Kathmandu Valley.
Besides the magnitude of the crime that occurred in 2003, the case was the centre of attention since the police finally produced in court two top Maoist leaders after holding them secretly in army barracks for nearly two years following their arrest in India.
Matrika Prasad Yadav, a member of the Maoist team that held peace talks with the government in 2003, and Suresh Ale Magar, another senior rebel leader, were produced in the appeals court in Patan after prolonged denial by the government that they were in detention.
The two underground leaders were arrested by Indian police in New Delhi in February 2004 and handed over to the Nepalese authorities. The arrest remained a mystery with both India and Nepal trying to create the impression that they were arrested from Lucknow in India.
Nepal has charged both the leaders with the murder of Krishna Mohan Shrestha, chief of Armed Police Force, in January 2003. Shrestha was gunned down in a broad daylight attack, as five men opened fire on him, while he was taking his morning walk. His wife and a bodyguard were also killed in the attack.
One of the attackers was injured in the gunfight and arrested.
