Zamboanga City (Philippines):
A US military high-speed vessel has arrived Thursday in Zamboanga City, south of the Philippines, and unloaded fresh humanitarian supplies, Filipino officials said.
The vessel, Joint Venture, was visiting the Philippines to support a joint humanitarian and civic effort, dubbed “Project Bayanihan,” the US Embassy said.
“We are here to deliver humanitarian supplies. This is part of our humanitarian efforts under the Project Bayanihan. Today’s events provide a solid example of how teamwork and partnering together among friends and allies can benefit those who are in need.” “Working together as a team, our efforts will have exponential effects for those Filipinos who are on the receiving end of this humanitarian assistance,” the ship’s skipper Commander Thomas Shaw said.

Filipino security officials said the Rajah Soliman group is tied to the Jemaah Islamiah. Bellard said the ship was carrying medical and other humanitarian supplies for distribution to indigent Filipinos in the south.
The 338-foot vessel was heavily guarded while it was docked in the port city, previously targeted by the al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf group. Security was tight at the port that Filipino journalists and a Japanese newspaper writer covering the ship’s arrival were frisked for weapons by US soldiers.
