The Coast Guard rescued a 74-year-old sailor off Cape Cod yesterday, but it isn't sure if he was the same sailor seen near the tumultuous Merrimack River's mouth Tuesday afternoon.
Salisbury police officers reported seeing a sailboat in the midst of rain, heavy wind and 25-foot ocean swells off the north end of Salisbury Beach as a Nor'easter lashed the coast.Coast Guard spokeswoman Kelly Newlin said that an initial call to the Merrimack River station Tuesday at about 5 p.m. described the boat as capsized and in distress.
A later call described the boat as beyond the mouth of the Merrimack and heading back to sea."The vessel seen by the Station Merrimack turned around and left," Newlin said. "We don't know whose boat that was."No distress call was made and no one has been reported missing. The local Coast Guard station sent its 47-foot lifeboat on a rescue mission.
The search continued yesterday morning with additional Coast Guard boats and an airplane, but nothing was found.
Meanwhile, another search had been underway since Sunday for an Ontario man who was missing.
