Rapist Trapped After 11 years
Manchester (UK):
A Porn baron who raped a woman 11 years ago has been brought to justice by a new police "cold case" unit.
The squad - similar to the fictional team on the TV programme Waking The Dead - used the latest DNA tracing techniques to nail the pervert who launched the attack in 1994.
Bryan Keen is the first person to be convicted after the unit reopened a previously-unsolved case.Advances in DNA technology had enabled police to catch Keen.
The vital clue was a trace of body fluid left on a towel at the Pelican Hotel, in Altrincham, where Keen put his victim through a harrowing two-hour ordeal while telling her he was recording her attack and humiliation on video. The towel had been recovered by forensic experts who worked on the original investigation, but they had been unable to get a full DNA profile from it because the technology was not sophisticated enough at the time.
It remained in a police evidence store until last year when officers from the Greater Manchester Police Cold Case Review Unit (CCRU) - sent it for DNA tests for a second time.It produced a direct match to for a previous sample given as a result of Keen’s arrest for an earlier crime.Yesterday at Manchester Crown Court, Keen, now 50, of Hazelwood Road, Wilmslow, was convicted of kidnap, false imprisonment, rape and indecent assault against the victim, known only as Miss A.
The woman’s ordeal began one night in September 1994.Working as a prostitute, she and was picked up by Keen and taken to the hotel room which was to be her prison cell and torture chamber for the next two hours.Keen then put his meticulously planned assault into operation. Around the hotel room, which he had booked in a false name, were strategically-placed pieces of extra-strong tape which he used along with a bandage he had been wearing on his arm to restrain and blindfold the woman. He also covered the 23-year-old’s body in hair-removing cream before his attack, telling her it was being recorded on video tape. Later, he was to remove the bedding, tape from the walls and everything – apart from the towel – which he thought could lead to his identification.
Speaking about Keen’s conviction yesterday, Det Sgt Andrew Meeks, from the CCRU, said: “This is an excellent result for the team and, most importantly, for the victim, who for the last 11 years has had to wonder if anyone will face justice for what they did to her".
