Meteorologists say they've unraveled part of the mystery behind the legendary sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
They say the ore carrier was in the worst place at the worst time when it sank during a storm off Whitefish Point in Lake Superior in 1975.
Experts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration say the freighter faced 69 mile-per-hour winds and hurricane-force gusts.
They also say waves topping 25 feet high also hammered the side of the ship as it made a run to safe waters, helping to force it under.
