An explosion ripped through a hospital residential complex in north China's Shanxi Province yesterday morning, killing at least 27 people and leaving an undetermined number missing. Authorities last night said the death toll will probably rise before rescuers finish sifting through the debris.
The cause of the blast was not immediately determined. The explosion originated in the parking garage of a medical center owned by the Yuanping Xuangang Coal and Electricity Co Ltd in Yuanping at about 2:25am, authorities said. The city in Shanxi's northeast is about 100 kilometers north of provincial capital Taiyuan.
Most of the victims were hospital employees and their families, according to Xinhua news agency, citing Li Jianzhang, a Xuangang official. The explosion destroyed a two-story residence near the garage and badly damaged a five-story residential building a few meters away, according to the company official. A corner of the five-story structure, which houses hospital staff, was destroyed, and many of its windows were shattered, Li said.
The shock wave also damaged buildings within a 1 square kilometer area, according to the Xinhua.
