New Delhi (India):
Police in the Indian capital Delhi have appealed against the acquittal of all nine accused in a model's murder case.
Jessica Lal was shot dead in April 1999 in a fashionable Delhi restaurant. The trial collapsed when all nine suspects, including main accused Manu Sharma, the son of a state minister - were acquitted for lack of evidence.
The trial judge criticised the "shoddy" police investigation and said the prosecution had not proved its case. The acquittals sparked public outrage. Delhi Police Commissioner KK Paul told the BBC that the appeal challenging the decision to acquit the nine accused had been lodged in the Delhi High Court.
Acquitting the nine last month, the trial judge said the prosecution had "miserably failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt against any of the accused".
