Baby still a mystery
Ponoka (Canada):
It's now considered a cold case, but Ponoka Mounties aren't giving up just yet in their search for the parents of a baby found dead in a knapsack nearly six years ago.
"We continue to appeal to the general public for any information or tips," said Cpl. David Heaslip.
"Somewhere out there, there's a mother that was there when the child was delivered and you would think their conscience would get to them, knowing this child was born.
"You would certainly feel that, somewhere along the line, she would certainly feel a lot better to clear her conscience to come to grips with this situation."
A family out for a drive on Oct. 3, 1999, found the baby's badly decomposed remains wrapped in towels - along with a single pearl-drop earring - inside a purple knapsack in the ditch by a rural road 20 km northwest of Ponoka, 105 km south of Edmonton.
Heaslip described the area where the baby was found as a remote area where a pumpjack was located. Police at the time estimated the bag was there for three or four weeks, and pleaded with the public for help finding the parents. Though police determined the baby boy was full-term, they never did conclude what caused the infant's death, said Heaslip.
Police received tips, tested DNA found on the baby and so far haven't got a match, said Heaslip. "We haven't had any new tips for quite some time," said Heaslip. "Anything is possible."
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers.
