Man Charged Over Yorkshire Ripper hoax

West Yorkshire (UK):
A man was today charged over the hoax Yorkshire Ripper letters and tapes sent to police and a national newspaper a quarter of a century ago, police have confirmed.
John Humble, 49, of the Ford Estate area of Sunderland, will appear before West Yorkshire magistrates later today on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "A 49-year-old man from the Ford Estate in Sunderland has now been charged with perverting the course of justice. He will appear before Leeds magistrates court today at 2pm."
The hoaxes, in 1978 and 1979, diverted the inquiry to the north-east, during which time Peter Sutcliffe went on to kill three more times. Sutcliffe was jailed in 1981 for the murder of 13 women.
